Estee Lauder pioneered the practice of giving free samples -- and that marketing strategy worked so well.
When she started the business with her husband in 1946, they only had $50,000 and couldn't get any advertising agency to take on her account. So they made samples and gave it away to women charity events in NY.
Plus they're good in tapping new markets for their company -- e.g. Origins brand for those who wants natural ingredients, Aramis fragrances in 1964, Clinique, Prescriptives, etc.
They're big in branding as well, maintaining one look for their global market.
